Wear your Dr. Seuss hat to school on Tuesday March 2nd (or dress up as your favorite Dr. Seuss character) to remember Dr. Seuss' birthday. We will be having Seussical fun in the library this week sharing Suess stories, discovering Seuss characters and stretching our imaginations like Dr. Seuss himself.

* If you would like to explore a fun online site with Seuss activities go to the "Suessville" link under online resources.

Winter Olympics

The Olympics are here and we are discovering a little about the current Olympic games, remembering past Olympics, and discovering how we can each be a champion through the book "Celebrate The Fire Within" by Kathy Larsen. You can access current information about what is happening @ the Olympics through the Olympics 2010 link listed under the online resources.

Alien Valentine

"It came from Outer Space", a picture book about an astronaut that crash lands into a school and is considered a monster by the aliens that live there, is the book we are sharing this week. Once the students at the school take the time to discover more about the "monster" they find out how nice he is and are sad when he has to leave. You can make an alien/heart card for valentines day by folding a paper in half and cutting it into the shape of an alien head (pictured to the left, a bulge on the top and pointy on the bottom.) Draw your alien face on the front of the card, then unfold the card and write your valentine message on the inside, which should be a heart shape (pictured on the right.)

At the beginning of 2010 I challenged students to learn/try something new, or to spend some time developing a talent or interest they already have. This week I am sharing pictures drawn by an artist that didn't start drawing until he was paralyzed in high school and his brother put a pencil in his mouth and challenged him to a drawing contest. To see more of his art or just find out more about this artist click on the "Mouth Art" link under online resources list. I am amazed!

Storytelling

As we make preparations for our storytelling competition at school, scheduled for March 4th, I am giving students storytelling ideas they might use to prepare for the competition. The top ASD storytellers may have the opportunity to audition for, and possibly perform at, the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival. The stories don't have to be long, sometimes the shorter the better (less to remember). I found a great site with short stories from all around the world, perfect for storytelling . Go to the "Stories in a Nutshell" link to see this collection of stories. I've also added a link if you'd like to visit the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival site.
